Use of the W5NC Callsign for Club Activities

To request use of the W5NC callsign for a club activity other than ARRL Field Day, the following requirements must be met:

  1. Submit a written request to the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at least two weeks before the proposed event.
  2. The request must include:
    • The name and title of the event.
    • The NARS member who will serve as the Control Operator.
  3. The Control Operator should hold an Amateur Extra Class license. A General Class licensee may be approved at the discretion of the Board, but operation must remain within General Class band privileges.
  4. The request will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and the Callsign Trustee to determine whether the event qualifies as a club activity and whether use of the W5NC callsign will be authorized.
  5. The requesting member will be notified of the approval decision.
  6. The Control Operator is responsible for:
    • Maintaining an operating log for the event.
    • Providing QSL information during the event.
    • Using a logging program capable of managing QSL records whenever practical.
  7. If time permits, the event's QSL information will be added to the W5NC QRZ page by the QRZ page manager.

ARRL Field Day

Use of the W5NC callsign for ARRL Field Day shall follow these guidelines:

  1. The W5NC callsign will be used at the club-designated Field Day location.
  2. The Field Day Coordinator will serve as the Control Operator for the duration of the event and should hold an Amateur Extra Class license.
  3. If the Field Day Coordinator does not hold an Extra Class license, the club will appoint a Co-Coordinator who does. The Co-Coordinator may leave the site but must designate and announce the person responsible for site operations during any absence.
  4. If the designated Control Operator holds a General Class license, all operations must remain within General Class band privileges, even when Extra Class operators are present.
  5. An Extra Class operator may assume Control Operator responsibility at any time. Such changes must be documented on the event sign-in sheet, including the time period during which that operator served as Control Operator.

Paul Owen | Trustee for W5NC

Purpose

These guidelines help ensure compliance with FCC regulations, proper oversight of club operations, and consistent management of the W5NC callsign during club-sponsored activities.
