Meshtastic and MeshCore are two emerging digital communications platforms that have gained significant interest among amateur radio operators, emergency communicators, and technically minded experimenters. Both use low-power LoRa (Long Range) radio technology to create decentralized communication networks that do not depend on cellular service, internet connectivity, or fixed infrastructure. Instead, each node forwards messages across a mesh network, allowing communications to travel beyond the range of a single radio.
Meshtastic is currently the more widely adopted of the two systems. It runs on inexpensive ($35 and up) LoRa devices and allows users to exchange text messages, GPS locations, telemetry data, and other information through a self-forming mesh network. The system integrates easily with Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth and has become popular among hikers, campers, off-road enthusiasts, emergency preparedness groups, and amateur radio operators. For hams, Meshtastic offers an opportunity to explore modern digital networking concepts while building local communication infrastructure that can continue operating when traditional networks are unavailable.
MeshCore is a newer project that shares many of the same goals but is designed with a stronger focus on lightweight operation, efficiency, and advanced mesh networking capabilities. It supports direct messaging, channel-based communications, node discovery, and routing functions while maintaining compatibility with many of the same LoRa hardware platforms used by Meshtastic. Some users are attracted to MeshCore because of its performance characteristics, reduced network overhead, and flexibility for experimentation.
For amateur radio operators, both platforms provide an excellent opportunity to learn about digital networking, packet routing, network topology, and radio propagation. While many deployments currently operate under unlicensed Part 15 rules using ISM frequencies, licensed amateurs can also experiment with these technologies on amateur radio frequencies where permitted by FCC regulations. Much like packet radio and APRS before them, Meshtastic and MeshCore demonstrate how modern microcontrollers and software-defined networking concepts are creating new ways to exchange information over the air.
As interest in emergency communications and resilient networking continues to grow, Meshtastic and MeshCore are becoming valuable additions to the amateur radio toolbox. They offer low-cost entry points into mesh networking, encourage experimentation and technical learning, and provide another way for hams to advance the Amateur Radio Service's long-standing mission of technical innovation and public service. Whether used for local messaging, event communications, situational awareness, or simply as a learning platform, these technologies represent an exciting evolution in digital radio communications.
